The Clibanarius Tricolor is a detritivore, it eats dead plants and animals so that they cannot obstruct the reef. It also eats green-haired algae, cyanobacteria, and algae in general. It even sifts through the sand in search of food.
The Clibanarius Tricolor is a very popular hermit crab in aquariums, due to its coloration and its feeding habits, since they help to maintain the aquarium's ecosystem with its continuous cleaning work, which significantly reduces the need active maintenance by the aquarist. During the molt the crab will shed its exoskeleton. The exoskeleton tends to stay on the substrate. The exoskeleton resembles a crab that has been removed from its shell, often causing the aquarist to believe that the crab has died even though this is not the case.
